Karen’s Recovery Story

When I fell over on my way to the off licence and ended up at A and E I knew it was time to seek help.

Karen had always liked a drink, yet when her husband passed away she seemed to cross an invisible line from social drinking to having to drink.

“I’d become very isolated and shut off from the outside world.  I only really left the house to replenish my supply of vodka and when I didn’t drink I felt ill”

In some ways, Karen had resigned herself to the fact that this was simply how it was going to be.  She had become estranged from her daughter and since her husband died, she found no pleasure in the simple things.

“I was consumed with grief and all I wanted to do was drink to oblivion.  In the end, the alcohol seemed to stop working.  When my neighbour saw me arrive home in a taxi from hospital I was racked with guilt and shame.  What frightened me more than anything was that I immediately shut the curtains and started drinking once more”.

Karen phoned Port of Call and spoke with Christine, an alcoholic in long term sobriety.  Christine helped Karen realise that a detox wasn’t as expensive as she feared it might be and helped Karen quickly and easily solve all the problems she was worrying about,

“Top of mind for me, as daft as it might sound now was what am I going to do with my dog while I’m away in the rehab clinic and how on earth will I get there”.

Christine encouraged Karen to reach out to her daughter – which she did straight away.  Karen’s daughter agreed to take the dog and Christine arranged for a car from the clinic to collect Karen that afternoon.

“Going into treatment was like a huge weight coming off my shoulders.  Just not drinking a day at a time and feeling ok was huge.  I realised whilst I was in detox that I hadn’t been looking after myself for many years – just eating, sleeping and not drinking was such a relief.  The therapy that followed was really tough; yet I finally spoke about my grief and realised that my husband would have been so proud of me for making such positive changes”.

Karen has now completed treatment and embraced Alcoholics Anonymous. She hold her head up high when the neighbours curtain rustles, she’s back playing bridge and even sees her daughter for lunch on a Sunday.  “I love being sober and count my lucky stars everyday that I made that phone call.  Thank you Christine for being so responsive and understanding.”

“I wanted somewhere caring and compassionate. Not a boot camp approach. I’m sober 6 months on”
