A West Midlander’s experience of alcohol rehab

Meet Sue, 38, from Birmingham. Following a painful divorce, Sue found solace in alcohol and would think nothing of drinking a bottle of vodka to herself most days. After a plea from her daughter, Sue sought help from Port of Call and put herself through alcohol rehab.

Sue’s story

From the moment I arrived at my alcohol rehab centre in Warwickshire I felt a weight lift from off my shoulders. It had been a rough fews years, for me and my daughter, since my marriage failed. This felt like the fresh start that I’d been putting on hold since my problem with alcohol began.

I’d seen the photos of the private rehab centre on Port of Call’s website and was surprised at how luxurious it seemed. I wasn’t disappointed with it in real life either. My room was beautifully decorated and homely, with lovely big wooden beams across the ceiling. It was important to me to be close to home, so a rehab centre located in the West Midlands was essential.

I’ve always been an outdoorsy type, so escaping from city life for four weeks in the Warwickshire countryside was just what I needed. Of course, this was no holiday camp but the green surroundings were really important to me during a difficult detox and whilst I was coming to terms with the deeper issues that led me to drink. Walking in the ornamental gardens and vegetable gardens every day became very soothing.

The standard of care from the doctors, nurses and counsellors was fantastic. They really looked after me well and nothing was ever too much. I found it was really cathartic to be around other people who were going through a similar experience with alcohol as me, and weren’t going to judge me. The individual counselling sessions also became a great outlet for me to talk through issues that I’d kept private for a long time.

The best thing about my experience of alcohol rehab is that it brought me closer to my daughter again. I’d kept her at arm’s length and we’d drifted apart. But she convinced me to get help and visited me most days at rehab. I can’t thank Port of Call enough for making it all happen. Right from my initial call they went out of their way to look after my needs. The advice and care I received was amazing. It’s completely changed my life.
