My son has a drug addiction – what should I do?

When you suspect that your son is addicted to drugs, it’s difficult to know how to respond. Will shouting at them help? Should you call the police? Should you just ignore the situation and hope it’s a passing phase?

We believe that ignoring the situation is the wrong thing to do. Help is available and we can provide it to you and your addicted son. Whilst there is no one solution for every situation, there are steps you can take to start his recovery.

Has my son got a drug addiction?

The first step is to ascertain ether your son is actually addicted to drugs. There will probably be obvious signs in terms of the change in their behaviour including depression, irritability, anxiety, nausea and fatigue. Eyes may be bloodshot, speech slurred and they may not be eating much.

If thoughts like ‘my son is an addict’ or ‘my son needs help with drug addiction’ have been playing on your mind, you need to talk to them. There’s a good chance your son will deny he has a problem. He may even be fooling himself that he can handle the drugs. But addiction is a progressive illness and you need to make sure the problem is addressed as soon as possible.

The sooner they can get help, the more effective the treatment will be and the quicker they can reach recovery.

This may well require an intervention.

My son needs help with drug addiction, can an intervention help?

An intervention is designed to show individuals struggling with an addiction the impact of their actions on others and can be effective in encouraging them to seek help. It involves a group of the addicts’ closest friends and family giving it to them straight: we love and care about you but your addiction is ruining everyone’s lives.

When the people closest to the individual battling with the addiction do this, a powerful force can be created that provides the jolt required for your son to seek help.

We won’t pretend that it’s an easy solution. But you will be provided with a counsellor (or interventionist) who will help make the intervention work and actively support you and your family in its implementation.

Preparing for intervention with a drug addicted individual

Before an intervention can take place, the counsellor will work with your family to find a suitable rehabilitation clinic, or drug rehab programme, with the capacity to treat your son immediately after the intervention.

The intervention needs to take place somewhere comfortable, and non-threatening for the drug addict. It should involve as many affected parties as possible. Those participating will receive intervention training and be prepared so they can offer the positive messages of care and encouragement with the greatest impact

Every person involved will provide the individual with examples of how they’ve been affected by their drug taking, what it’s done to their relationship and what they hope the addict will achieve. Their love will be emphasised but they will also be firm that they can’t support continued self-destruction.

Interventions work and could well save the lives of your children. If you have ever thought ‘my son has a drug addiction’, then Port of Call can organise every aspect of your intervention programme. We’ll provide you with a free and confidential assessment over the telephone and a fully qualified counsellor to facilitate the entire intervention process.
